What To Look For From Best Website Hosting Deals

Filed Under (Web Hosting, best website hosting deals) by admin on 09-05-2010

What makes the best website hosting services? Finding the best website hosting has several components. The best hosts have unlimited bandwidth, email, SQL databases, unlimited POP mailboxes, unlimited domains hosted, and even more. Some of the additional features you’ll find are free additional services such as blog installation, shell access, shopping cart software, phpBB software for bulletin boards, and so on. So how do you tease our the right webhost for you?

The big difference is often price. You can find deals as low as a few dollars a month. Usually, these require that you pay for a year in advance, which can still be upwards of $100 up front. But paying less does not mean you are getting less. Some of the best webhosts charge lower fees because they know they can offer you great service and keep you as a customer for life. They are not just looking for a quick sale, but want to convince you of their quality, and keep you as a customer for life. You’ll be able to tell when you review their site, talk to their customer service people, what their attitude is toward customer service.

Another thing to look for, is if you find a site that is confusing, full of images and flash, crowded with information, this can indicate a company that intends to confuse buyers as to exactly what they are getting. For example, having to go through a dozen upsell pages before you can just pay for your account indicates a company that makes every extra cost more, and is trying to get you to click on things you may or may not really want. Especially beware of companies that offer discounts is you buy more items. After the first year expires on these items, you’ll find you’re paying a much higher rate to renew them. They’ve tried to lock you in to high fees with confusing sign up processes.

Instead, you should easily be able to see all that is included with the hosting service you are looking to purchase, and understand the extra fees if any, so you can make an apples to apples comparison.

Green Website Hosting – Is It A Sham?

Filed Under (Web Hosting) by admin on 07-08-2009

With the huge amounts of energy that data centers use, switching to “green hosting” is something that hosting companies are doing to save costs, but also because more and more customers are asking whether their hosting is carbon neutral

But what exactly does green website hosting mean?  And is it a sham?

There are basically two types of ways hosting can be more sustainable.  The electricity use  to power the servers is provided by several types of fuel, not all of them carbon based, depending on location in the country.  In some areas of the US, electricity is primarily coal-powered.  In others, electricity is mainly nuclear.

When it comes to green hosting, some providers will tell you they are “green” because they are buying carbon credits.  This means they are not using renewal energy to power their servers, but rather are buying offset credits in some market or other to generate enough renewable energy elsewhere to “offset” the carbon their power emits.

Other hosts are using renewable energy to power their servers. They are usually buying green power from their local power company, which is sometimes hydro, sometimes wind, sometimes solar, or other mix.   This doesn’t always mean the host themselves receive clean power directly, but rather that an amount of renewable energy flows into the local grid equal to the amount of power used by the host.

Some people feel that buying offsets is not really “green” because the power used in the first place is still emitting CO2.  In addition,  unlike buying renewable energy from a power company, with offsets it is far more difficult to prove an actual 1-to-1 matching reduction in CO2 somewhere else.

Still, no matter what type of green website hosting is offered, it’s good to see hosting companies on the path of reducing their potentially very heavy CO2 footprint due to powering servers.

For green website hosting, we recommend Host Gator, one of the best all around website hosting companies, as well as Dreamhost.
